SEO for lawyers
SEO for lawyers gets your firm showing up in Google search and Google Maps when someone looks for an attorney in your practice area. You don't pay per click, and the people who arrive already have a real problem. What matters is consultations, not visits.
I'm not an agency with a sales team. I'm an SEO consultant and you deal with me from start to finish.
What SEO for a law firm is and what I actually do
SEO (search engine optimization) means organizing your site and your Google presence so the people already searching for you can find you. My part:
- Structure: I set up the site so Google understands which practice areas you cover and where you serve clients.
- Practice area pages: one per area, written around what clients really type.
- Local SEO: Google Business Profile, reviews and consistent name, address and phone across directories.
- Technical work: a site that loads fast on a phone, runs on HTTPS and uses proper schema.
- Measurement: GA4 and Looker Studio, so you see how many calls and form leads come from Google.
How I work: the SEO process for law firms
- 1Audit: I look at your site, your Maps profile and where you rank today.
- 2Keyword research: what your clients search for in each practice area and in your city.
- 3Pages: titles, copy and structure for every practice area page.
- 4Local SEO: a complete profile, the right categories and a simple way to ask for reviews.
- 5Content: a realistic article plan that you review before anything goes live.
- 6Links and mentions: legal directories, local press and industry sites. No bought links.
- 7Monthly tracking: rankings, traffic and leads, in a report you can actually read.
The pages a law firm website needs
- Home page: which areas you handle, where, and how to reach you.
- One page per practice area (personal injury, family, criminal defense, estate planning…) with its own content, not a pasted paragraph.
- Attorney bios with names, bar admissions and experience. Clients want to know who signs.
- A clear contact page with map and hours.
- A blog that answers the questions clients really ask.
How clients search for a lawyer on Google
Hardly anyone types "law firm". People search for their problem: "fired without notice what can I do", "inherited a house with debt", "divorce lawyer near me".
- Service searches: they want to hire now. Practice area pages and the Map Pack win here.
- Informational searches: they are still figuring out their situation. This is where the blog earns their trust.
A lot of these searches happen on a phone, in a hurry. If your site is slow, they go to the next one.
Local SEO for lawyers: Google Maps and reviews
Google lets the firm have its own Business Profile, and each attorney who sees clients can have one too, under their own name. It does not allow keywords stuffed into the business name (Source: Google Business Profile Help, October 2026).
Be careful with reviews. You can ask for them, but you can't offer anything in return or ask only your happy clients (Source: Google Maps user-contributed content policy, October 2026). And when you reply, never mention details of the matter. Confidentiality applies to review replies too.
What the ethics rules say about lawyer advertising
Your website counts as advertising. In the US, most states base their rules on the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct, Rules 7.1 to 7.3, although each state bar has its own version. For SEO, in practice:
- No false or misleading claims, and no promises about results you can't control.
- No giving anything of value in exchange for a recommendation.
- Don't say you are a certified specialist unless a state-approved or ABA-accredited body has certified you, and name that body.
- Some states require a disclaimer on past results or testimonials.
You know the rules of your state better than I do. My job is to write copy that ranks without crossing those lines, and you sign off on it.
Common SEO mistakes law firms make
These are the problems I see most often when I review a law firm website:
- One "Practice Areas" page listing everything. Google can't tell what to rank you for.
- A blog of copied legal news that never explains who it affects.
- A half-finished Maps profile, or a business name packed with keywords.
- Not tracking calls. If you don't know where leads come from, you don't know what works.
SEO consultant, SEO agency or automated tool
| SEO consultant | SEO agency | Automated tool | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who you talk to | The person doing the work | An account manager | Nobody, it's a dashboard |
| Industry knowledge | Depends on their law firm experience | Depends on the team you get | None, generic rules |
| Legal content | Reviewed with you before it goes live | Usually written by a content team | Generated or suggested without review |
| Capacity | A few projects at a time | Many projects, more hands | Unlimited, but no judgment |
When to hire an SEO consultant for your law firm
- You have a website, but clients only come through referrals and you want another channel.
- Your Maps profile has few reviews and another firm nearby always shows up first.
- You're opening a new practice area and want to be found from day one.
- Someone built you a nice website that nobody finds. It happens more than you'd think.
My experience with SEO for lawyers
I've done SEO for law firms, and I know trust is everything here. The client arrives worried, compares two or three websites and calls the one that explains their problem best. And lawyers don't have time to write, so the work has to fit around their schedule.
I've been doing SEO and paid search since 2013. I ran lead generation for architecture studios at ChovA and international SEO at Heymondo and IDFinance (Moneyman), sectors where you also have to earn trust before anyone gets in touch.
Frequently asked questions about SEO for lawyers
What is SEO for lawyers?
It's the work of getting a law firm's website and Maps profile to show up when people search for legal help: practice area pages, local SEO, technical fixes, content and links. The goal is calls and consultations, not traffic for its own sake.
What is the typical cost of SEO for a law firm?
It depends on how many practice areas and cities you target, the state of your site and how much content needs writing. Some consultants charge a monthly retainer and others by project. Ask for a written list of what's included each month, because comparing prices without it tells you nothing.
What is the best SEO for lawyers?
There isn't one best option for every firm. Look for someone who understands legal marketing rules, shows you how they measure results and doesn't promise the number one spot, because nobody can guarantee it. Most "best law firm SEO" lists are written by the agencies on them.
Is SEO still worth it in 2026?
For law firms, yes, as long as you measure leads and not just rankings. People still search Google when they need a lawyer, and AI answers pull from pages that explain things clearly. If you also want to show up in ChatGPT or Google's AI answers, see SEO for AI.
How long does SEO take for a law firm?
You usually see the first changes in a few months, and more in competitive cities and practice areas like personal injury. Local results from the Maps profile tend to move faster than organic rankings.
