How to appear in ChatGPT: what helps and what does not
Let me be straight from the start. People ask me all the time how to appear in ChatGPT, and I don't have a magic formula. Nobody does. What I can share is what I do, with no hype.
No guarantees of appearing in ChatGPT
You can't pay to show up in ChatGPT's answers. There's no signup button and no technical trick that puts you first.
The model mixes many sources. Sometimes it links to sites, sometimes it gets things wrong. If someone offers to put you first in ChatGPT for a fee, walk away. I can't do it, and I doubt they can.
What you can do is raise your odds: clear content, real data and a presence in places the model already reads. None of that assures a spot, but it puts you in a better position.
How to do SEO for ChatGPT: what helps you get cited
Think like the chat. It wants to answer fast with something clear, and a messy page won't get used.
Here is what I do:
- Put the direct answer at the top. If you explain a process, give the steps first and the explanation after.
- Keep lines short and one topic per page.
- Share data people can quote. I don't mean fancy studies. I mean your real work: the questions clients ask you and the mistakes you see every week. That's concrete, and concrete is what a chat can use.
- Add structured data, the code that tells Google what a page is about. It won't put you in ChatGPT by itself, but it makes the page easier to understand.
- Use the same name and the same way of explaining what you do everywhere you show up.
- Appear on sites that already get cited: ordinary press, known blogs, serious forums in your field. Join in with real help, never spam.

How to check if ChatGPT cites you
This is easy and free. Make a short list of ten real questions your clients ask, and paste them into ChatGPT as they are. Check whether you show up and who shows up with you.
Then look closer. Do they link to you or just name you? Which of your pages do they use? Which rivals appear more often? That tells you where you're weak.
Try different forms too: short and long questions, with your city and without it. You'll see the answers change a lot.
Don't chase every query. I'd rather show well on a few key questions than badly on many. And if the chat says something false about you, fix your own site first, so it's clear who you are, what you do and where you work.
How it differs from classic SEO
Is SEO dead now with AI? No. People still search on Google, and AI answers draw on the same web. But the daily work shifts a bit.
In classic SEO you write for a clear search. In chat people ask long, complete questions and want a closed answer, so a page that answers only half fails.
In classic SEO the click is the prize. In chat there is often no click: they cite you and the user stays in the conversation. That hurts, I know, but it builds your name. I think of it as local radio. You don't know exactly who listens, but they hear you.
The basics still matter: a fast site, clear titles and content that answers. What changes is tone. I write more directly and put a short summary first.
Frequently asked questions about appearing in ChatGPT
How do I rank in ChatGPT?
You can't rank in the classic sense. You raise the odds of being cited: direct answers, real data, a consistent name and mentions on sites the model already reads.
Is SEO dead now with AI?
No. Search is still how most people find a business, and AI answers lean on pages that rank and answer clearly. The craft is changing, not disappearing.
What is the 80/20 rule in SEO?
Roughly, a small share of your pages brings most of your visits and enquiries. I put my time on those pages first: sharper titles, direct answers, better internal links.
How do I rank my SEO?
Start with the pages that earn money. Check they load fast, answer one clear question and have a title that says what's inside. Then track queries in Search Console and adjust.
My take: no guarantees. Write clearly, share useful facts, keep your name the same everywhere and test what the chat says about you. Step by step.
